During 1983 Margaret Thatcher was in power, unemployment was acute, laws were being passed that were crippling the trade unions and the left was finding it hard to challenge her right-wing policy. Rowland decided to do something about it: if not nationally at least locally.
Using the local Chile Solidarity Committee as a base and the traditional May Day Rally as an excuse, he and a small group of volunteers gradually built up the momentum to set up the largest anti-government demonstration ever to take place in Stirling.
It is a tribute to Rowland’s powers of persuasion that he managed to convince so many different organisations to take part. Just about every local branch of the Labour, Communist, Anarchist, Socialist Worker, and Liberal Parties took part. The Trade Unions were there in force. Nalgo was there as were the T&GWU and the miners - and so were the many anti-apartheid, CND and other solidarity committees.
To this day it has never been surpassed. Maggie! Maggie! Maggie,! Out! Out! Out!
